General Sports Wagering

Animated Betting Tutorial Animated Betting Tutorial Animated Betting Tutorial

Sports betting is a game of skill. The challenge is to gather and analyze as much information as you can about a game, weigh the probabilities of each team winning, and subsequently compare your opinion to the oddsmaker's. Make the right judgment and you win. It's as simple as that.

While luck may be a deciding factor in the outcome of any single game, and will inevitably go against you on occasion, it will balance out in the long run. Being a consistent winner in sports betting is not about luck but whether you are prepared to invest the time and effort to become knowledgeable about the sports you bet on, whether you can weigh all the factors in a cool, objective fashion, and whether you adopt a consistent, disciplined, long-term approach to your betting. Do all these and you will come out a winner. Remember, it's you against the oddsmaker, not the bookmaker.

The bookmaker is simply a middle-man who operates on a small profit margin and, ideally, likes to see half the money wagered on one team and half on the other, assuring him of a profit. If too much of the money goes on one team, the bookmaker will move the line or pointspread to encourage bets on the other team in an effort to balance his book. The person you are attempting to beat is the oddsmaker and his views on each team's chances. Just by flipping a coin you will be right 50 percent of the time. At odds of 10/11 only 52.4 percent of your bets have to win for you to overcome the bookmaker's profit and break even, so you only need a very small edge to become a winner. Do your homework, bet selectively and 55 percent winning bets is definitely achievable and 60-65 percent is a realistic target. At those levels you will have an extremely profitable, as well as enjoyable, hobby.

Basic Types of Sports Wagers

The most common type of sports wager is on the result of a single game, known as a straight wager. One team is typically favored over another by a pointspread; the favorite gives the underdog points as a head start, for betting purposes only. The favorite is always indicated by a minus sign (e.g. -3) and the underdog by a plus sign (e.g. +3). The amount of points a customer must give is estimated to be the amount which will generate equal wagering on both the underdog and the favorite. For betting purposes, the result of the game is determined by taking the actual score and subtracting points from the favorite's score or adding points to the underdog's score. So, a favorite can win the game but lose it for betting purposes and an underdog can lose the game but win it for betting purposes.

In all straight bets which are set by a pointspread, the customer lays $11 for every $10 the customer wishes to win. For example, the Green Bay Packers may be favored by 14 points over the Chicago Bears. A customer who wishes to win $10 on Green Bay must give Chicago 14 points, if Green Bay wins by more than 14 points than the customer wins $10. If Green Bay wins by less than 14 points or loses outright, then the customer loses $11.

A customer can also bet whether the combined number of points or goals scored by the two teams in the game will be over or under the total set by the oddsmaker. For example, if the total is 32 and you believe that the combined points scored by the two teams will exceed that number, you would bet over 32.

A bet on a matchup between two teams may be set by a money line, or odds, instead of a pointspread. If a matchup is determined by a money line, like American baseball, then it will cost the customer more to wager on the favorite. For example, the Atlanta Braves may be favored over the Chicago Cubs by 150. In this example, the customer must lay $150 in order to win $100 if Atlanta wins the game, no pointspreads are involved. If Atlanta loses, the customer loses $150. However, the customer could bet on Chicago, in which case the customer would lay $100 in order to win $150 if Chicago wins the game. If Chicago loses, the customer only loses $100, because Chicago is the underdog.

For bets on soccer, the result of the game is decided after 90 minutes of play plus penalty time. Extra time/Overtime/Golden Goal is not taken into consideration for soccer bets unless otherwise stipulated. For Cricket games, if the match is shortened by the weather, bets will be governed by the official competition rules.

For Rugby Games, if any match is abandoned or postponed all bets will be void, except bets on the first try scorer if a try has been scored prior to abandonment.

For Tennis Match betting, in the event of a match starting but not being completed, the player progressing to the next round will be deemed the winner. In the event of any of the following circumstances taking place all bets will stand: (i) a change of palying surface, (ii) a change of venue or (iii) a change from indoor court to outdoor court or vice versa.

Parlay or Multiples Betting. No multiple (parlay) bets can be accepted where individual legs are 'connected'. For example, one leg of a parlay is for Sampras to beat Henman in the 4th round of Wimbeldon and the second or additional part of the parlay is for Sampras to win the overall Wimbledon title. The match forms part of the overall tournament and is therefore 'connected'. In the same way, you cannot parlay the over of the first half of a football game with the over of the total game, because the two are 'connected'.

Exotic Sports Wagers

A parlay is a bet on 2, 3, 4 or more teams or selections. The customer can combine different sports, pointspreads and money lines, in win/loss and/or totals betting. In a parlay your original stake and winnings are re-invested on the next game and all selections must be correct - one loss and your parlay loses. In the event of a push, game cancellation or a pitcher that you have specified not starting, the parlay reduces to the next lower number, e.g. a 4-team parlay becomes 3-teams. A winning parlay wager will pay many times more than the initial wager.

A Teaser is like a parlay in that it is a bet on 2, 3, 4 or more teams or selections. You can also combine different sports, pointspreads and money lines, in win/loss and/or totals betting. The difference between a teaser and a parlay is that in a teaser you adjust the line in your favor. For example New York might be favored by 9 points in one game and Chicago might be favored by 12 points in a second game. A 6 point teaser would adjust the Chicago pointspread 6 points in the customers favor; i.e. Chicago would now be favored by 6 points (12-6=6). The customer might make a bet on a 6 point teaser with Chicago and New York. In this example the customer is betting that Chicago will win by 6 points and New York will win by 3 points (9-6=3). As in the parlay, all teams must win.

A future bet is a wager on an event or outcome that will be determined sometime in the future. For Example, it might be a bet made at the start of the season on Dallas Cowboys to win the Super Bowl. Futures odds change continuously throughout the season - YOU GET THE ODDS IN EFFECT AT THE TIME YOU BET. Futures bets often attract (high) odds to the bettor.

An If Win wager is an excellent choice for money management. You wager a fixed amount on one team if that team wins or the game is tied, then another fixed amount -up to the original amount- shall be placed on a different team. Your first wager must win in order for you to have action on the remaining wagers. If the first wager loses, there is No Action thereafter. You cannot have duplicate teams in the same If Win wager.

Reverse wagers revert to individual If Bets. You can include up to 8 teams in a Reverse. The payoffs vary depending on the number of teams wagered on. A 2 Team Reverse pays 4/1, a 3 Team Reverse pays 12/1 (if the wager is $100). Standard reverse bets are Double Action; therefore in the event of a tie the bet is still active.

How to Wager Online

To make a straight bet on a team: choose the appropriate sport, click on the box next to the team, and click on the 'Straight Bet' button at the bottom of the page. You can only make one straight bet at a time. Choose the dollar amount to be wagered and click 'Place Bet.' The bet is then placed.

Making an over/under bet on a team is similar to a straight bet: choose the appropriate sport, click on the box next to either the home/away team (click only one), and click on the 'Totals (Over) Bet' button or the 'Totals (Under) Bet' button at the bottom of the page. Choose the dollar amount to be wagered and click 'Place Bet.' The bet is then placed.

A parlay is made by clicking on the buttons next to the teams or over/under, just like above, choosing between two and five teams. To choose a side and the total, then click the boxes next to both teams in that particular game. Click on the 'Parlay' button at the bottom of the page.

You are then asked to choose either the side or the over/under before choosing the dollar amount. Choose the dollar amount to be wagered and click 'Place Bet.' The bet is then placed.

A teaser is made by clicking on the buttons next to the teams, just like a parlay, choosing between two and five teams. Click on the appropriate point 'Teaser' button at the bottom of the page. Choose the dollar amount to be wagered and click 'Place Bet.' The bet is then placed.

Wagers and Payoffs for Sports

Straight Bets: The team wagered on must win by the point spread given at the time of the wager. For straight wagers, unless otherwise indicated, the odds are $1.10 to win $1.00. Games that tie are considered "no action" and money is re-deposited back into your account. Due to changing events, the point spread may fluctuate at any time.

Example: Player wagers $110.00 on Miami -7 to beat Buffalo +7

If Miami wins by more than 7 points the player wins $100.00 so the total payout including the intial wager would be $210.00. If Miami only wins by 7 points then the game is considered "no action" and all money is returned to the bettor. If the Miami wins by less than 7 points the wagers is lost.

Totals The combined score of both teams for games wagered on, all totals lay $1.10 to win $1.00 unless it is otherwise indicated.

Example: The player lays $220.00 on the OVER in the Miami/Buffalo game. The total for the game is 45. If both teams' combined score is more than 45 than the player would win $200.00. If the combined score is equal 45 the game is concidered "no action" and the mone y is returned. If the combined score is less than 45 then the wager is lost.

Money Line Wagers The team wagered on just has to win the game. The amount you lay or take for each game may vary. The money line that is read to at the time of your wager is the money line you keep regardless of any line movement.

Example: The player wagers on Miami -160 at Buffalo +260. If Miami wins then the player would lay $160.00 to win $100.00. If the player bet on Buffalo then the player would lay $100.00 to win $260.00

Parlays A parlay is the selection of 2 or more teams (up to 10) in no particular order in a single wager. All teams in the parlay must win, if there is a tie it reverts to the next lowest number for payoff. (Example: If you select 4 teams and one ties, it becomes a three team parlay). Tie and win on two teamer becomes straight bet (90% of wager)

Buying Points

Buying Points allows you the ability to change the point spread of a football or basketball game. You can move the point spread so you get more points if you are betting the underdog or you give away less points if you are betting the favorite. For each half point that you change the point spread you need to pay an extra 10%.

So for example, if you are betting the Lakers -5 -110 (lay $110 to win $100), you can buy the Lakers a half point to -4.5 -120 (lay $120 to win $100). You can buy the Lakers a full point to -4 -130 (lay $130 to win $100).

Same theory is true for the underdog. If the Bulls are +4 -110, you buy the game to +4.5 -120 or +5 -130.

You can only buy a maximum of 3 points in Football and Basketball, both college and pro.

There are two special rules:

1. When buying on or off the number 3 in the Pro Football, there is a premium cost of 25%, not 10%. So for example to move the Chargers from -3 -110 to -2.5, the new line will be -2.5 -135 (lay $135 to win $100). The same is true for the underdog, to buy Bears from +3 -110 to +3.5 will be -135 (lay $135 to win $110).

2. On half or reduced juice games or half or reduced juice days, there are additional premium costs for buying points: a. for 1-50 points on college football, there is a 5% additional premium. b. for buying on or off the number 7 on college football, the premium is 25%. c. for 1-25 points on professional football, there is a 5% additional premium. d. for buying on or off the number 3 or 7 on professional football, the premium is 25%.

Progressive Parlays
There are very few Sportsbooks that offer Progressive Parlays, less than a handful and you will not find these anywhere in Las Vegas. Sportsbook.com invented the Progressive Parlay three years ago and continues to dominate the competition in Payout Value.

How does a Progressive Parlay work? In fact, it's quite simple. In exchange for not getting quite as big a payout for picking a perfect combination, you are getting insurance for those rare occasions when one or more or the teams in your parlay losses.

Let us look at an example. An 8 team progressive parlay for $10 will payout $750 for making a perfect 8 team winning combination. If you are only able to find 7 winners then you win $100. And if you only bring home 6 winners then you will still find a winning ticket for $20.

All Teams Won 1 Team Loss 2 Teams Lose 3 Teams Lose
4 Teams 5/1 1/1 -- --
5 Teams 11/1 2/1 -- --
6 Teams 20/1 9/2 -- --
7 Teams 40/1 4/1 1/2 --
8 Teams 75/1 10/1 2/1 --
9 Teams 150/1 20/1 5/2 --
10 Teams 250/1 25/1 3/1 1/1
11 Teams 400/1 60/1 5/1 1/1
12 Teams 900/1 80/1 10/1 3/1

Teasers:

A Teaser is a selection of two or more teams in one wager in which the point spread is adjusted in your favor. The number of teams selected and the number of points selected determines the payout odds. A "Tie" or "No Action" and a "Win" on a two team teaser shall constitute a "No Action" wager. A "Tie" or a "No Action" and a "Loss" on a two team teaser shall constitute a "Losing" wager. Ties on a three or more team teaser shall revert to the next lowest betting bracket. (Example: A tie on a three team becomes a two team teaser.)

An example of a teaser wagers is as follows. For our example, let us say you wish to choose three football teams: Denver -7, New York -3 and Chicago +15. The payout of the wager is dependant upon how many points you wish to receive. Let us choose a 3 team 7 point teaser. If we look at the chart below, this wager is listed as 10/12, which means we will win $10 for every $12 that we wager. The point spreads are adjusted as follows

  • Denver -7 plus the adjusted seven points = Even
  • New York -3 plus the adjusted seven points = +4
  • Chicago +15 plus the adjusted seven points = +22
Therefore, if each and every one of the three teams wins against the adjusted spread, you win $12 for every $10 you wager.

If - Win/If - Action bets Explained

An If Win bet is an excellent choice for money management. You wager a fixed amount on one team, if that team wins, then the same amount as your original wager is placed on a different team.

For example, you can have a two team If Win Bet for $11 on the Bears and Giants. If the Bears win, you risked $11 to win $10 and now you have another $11 wager on the Giants. If they win, then you win another $10 for a total of $20 in winnings. If the Giants lose, then you lose $1, because you won $10 on the Bears and you lose $11 on the Giants. If the Bears lost, then you lose your original $11 and you have no bet on the Giants.

Here is an example of a four team If bet:

Bears Giants Rams Cowboys Total
Risk $11 $11 $11 $11 $11
To Win $10 $10 $10 $10

Scenario One Win Win Win Win
Result +$10 +$10 +$10 +$10 +$40

Scenario Two Win Win Win Lose
Result +$10 +$10 +$10 -$11 +$19

Scenario Three Win Win Lose No Bet
Result +$10 +$10 -$11 +$9

Scenario Four Win Lose No Bet No Bet
Result +$10 -$11 -$1

Scenario Five Lose No Bet No Bet No Bet
Result -$11 -$11

Your first wager must win in order for you to have action on the remaining wagers. If the first wager loses, there is No Action thereafter. You can put as many as 2 to 7 teams in an If Win bet.

How is an If Action Bet Different?

There is a simple difference between an If Win bet and an If Action bet. In an If Win bet your first wager must WIN in order for the next wager to have action. In an If Action bet each wager must WIN or PUSH (tie) in order for the next wager to have action. While the Push will result in neither a win nor a lose for you on that particular game, we will continue on to the next wager in your bet whereas in an If Win bet we would have stopped the bet at the Push.

Soccer if bets

An If Win bet is an excellent choice for money management. You wager a fixed amount on a soccer result, and if that bet wins, then the same amount as your original wager is placed on a different result.

For example, you can have a two result If Win Bet for $11 on the Liverpool to win and Arsenal to tie. If Liverpool wins, you risked $11 to win $10 and now you have another $11 wager on Arsenal to tie. If they tie, then you win another $10 for a total of $20 in winnings. If Arsenal does not tie, then you lose $1, because you won $10 on Liverpool and you lost $11 on Arsenal. If Liverpool lost or tied (did not win), then you lose your original $11 and you have no bet on Arsenal.

NOTE: In soccer bets a Tie is a betting option and if you bet on a win and a game ties, this DOES NOT constitute a push in terms of if bets. In that case a tie will be considered a loss.

Here is an example of a four team If bet:

Liverpool Win Arsenal Tie Man Utd Win Tottenham Tie Chelsea Win
Risk $11 $11 $11 $11 $11
To Win $10 $10 $10 $10

Scenario One Win Win Win Win
Result +$10 +$10 +$10 +$10 +$40

Scenario Two Win Win Win Lose
Result +$10 +$10 +$10 -$11 +$19

Scenario Three Win Win Lose No Bet
Result +$10 +$10 -$11 +$9

Scenario Four Win Lose No Bet No Bet
Result +$10 -$11 -$1

Scenario Five Lose No Bet No Bet No Bet
Result -$11 -$11

Your first wager must win in order for you to have action on the remaining wagers. If the first wager loses, there is No Action thereafter. You can put as many as 2 to 7 teams in an If Win bet.

How is an If Action Bet Different?

There is a simple difference between an If Win bet and an If Action bet. In an If Win bet your first wager must WIN in order for the next wager to have action. In an If Action bet each wager must WIN or be No Actioned in order for the next wager to have action. While the No Action will result in neither a win nor a lose for you on that particular game, we will continue on to the next wager in your bet whereas in an If Win bet we would have stopped the bet at the No Action. Note: In Soccer betting, a tie is a betting option and will not be considered a push for result purposes.
